Finished a Pottery Course? How to Keep Your Pottery Practice Going in East London
Have you recently completed a pottery course in London and found yourself wanting to make more? Perhaps you’ve finished a 4-week wheel throwing course, joined an improver pottery class, or discovered that working with clay has become a favourite part of your week.
The end of a pottery course doesn't have to mean the end of your ceramics journey. In fact, it's often where the real learning begins.
At Cone8 Ceramics, our women-led pottery studio in Hackney Wick, Fish Island, East London, we believe that making ceramics is a journey of continuous learning, experimentation and connection. We're excited to be moving into a bigger studio space soon, creating more room for our community to learn, practise and develop their own creative work.
If you're looking for ways to continue pottery after a course, here's how regular practice and a supportive studio community can help you grow.
Why regular pottery practice matters
Pottery is a hands-on craft that develops through repetition. You might understand the basic steps of wheel throwing during a class, but centring clay, pulling even walls and creating consistent forms all take time and practice.
The same is true of handbuilding, trimming, glazing and experimenting with different surface techniques.
Regular practice allows you to:
- Build confidence with the techniques you've already learned.
- Develop greater control over your clay and the forms you create.
- Experiment with new shapes, textures, colours and glazing combinations.
- Learn from mistakes and discover your own creative approach.
- Start developing a personal ceramics practice rather than simply following a class project.
You don't need to make a perfect pot every time. Sometimes the most valuable session is the one where you experiment, make mistakes and discover something unexpected.
What can you do after a 4-week pottery course?
Completing a four-week pottery course gives you a foundation to build on. Once you've learned the basics, the next step is finding a way to keep practising without losing the momentum you've developed.
There are several ways to continue.
1. Join regular pottery classes
Regular classes are ideal if you enjoy learning with a teacher and want structured guidance. You can revisit techniques, ask questions and gradually take on more challenging projects.
2. Attend pottery improver sessions
Improver classes are suitable for people who have some previous experience and want to strengthen their skills. They offer an opportunity to work on specific techniques while continuing to learn alongside other potters.
3. Make time for independent practice
If you want to develop your own work, independent studio time gives you the freedom to repeat techniques, test ideas and work at your own pace. Having a consistent place to practise can make it much easier to turn pottery into a regular creative habit.
4. Combine classes with studio practice
For many developing potters, a combination of guided learning and independent practice offers the best of both worlds. You can learn new techniques in class, then spend additional time putting them into practice.
Introducing the Cone8 Improver Membership
At Cone8 Ceramics, we've created our Improver Membership for people who want to continue learning while making more time for their own ceramics practice.
It's particularly suitable if you've completed one of our four-week pottery courses, attended our improver classes or already have some wheel throwing experience and want to build confidence through regular practice.
The Improver Membership combines structured classes with dedicated studio access, helping you make pottery a more consistent part of your life.
What's included?
For £210 per month, the Improver Membership includes:
- £120 monthly class credit to use towards eligible classes on the Cone8 website.
-8 hours of dedicated studio access each week, excluding weekends and scheduled class times.
- A regular opportunity to practise independently and develop your own projects.
- Access to a supportive ceramics community where you can continue learning alongside fellow makers.
The membership has a minimum commitment of three months. Monthly class credits cannot be carried over or transferred.
Whether your goal is to improve your wheel throwing, experiment with forms or simply spend more time making, the membership offers a way to combine learning with regular practice.

A bigger studio, with more room to make!
We're excited to be moving into a bigger studio space in Mid November 2026.
As Cone8 grows, we want to create a welcoming environment where people can develop their skills, explore their creativity and feel part of a ceramics community.
Our new space marks an exciting next chapter for the studio. We're looking forward to having more room for making and practising, while continuing to offer the classes, workshops and community connections that make Cone8 special.
For our former students, it's an opportunity to return to the clay, build on what you've learned and keep your creative momentum going.

Everyone's ceramics journey is different, so the best membership depends on how you want to use your time in the studio.

If you're an experienced ceramicist who can work independently, our Residency Membership may be a better fit. It is designed for makers who need studio access to develop their own practice. We invite prospective residents to visit the studio so we can discuss their experience and requirements.
